Despite its huge hydrocarbon reserves, Nigeria has the largest energy access deficit in the world. 85 million Nigerians do not have access to electricity, and this is a major constraint for private companies and manufacturing (World Bank data).
~187 Bscf of gas was flared in 2022, making it one of the top ten gas-flaring countries in the world (World Bank data)
LNG presents an opportunity to supply gas to customers as a cheaper alternative source of fuel and plant feedstock through virtual pipelines for power generation and manufacturing facilities currently without access to pipeline gas.
Rhofurd Energy is developing the Sapele LNG project which will at completion of phase 1 of the project will offtake 20 MMscf/d of gas from Seplat Energy to produce 360 TPD (11kt monthly) of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Phase 2 of the project will expand the plant and double LNG production to 720mt/d (22kt monthly).
Seplat Energy PLC. completed commissioning of a 90MMscf/d capacity gas processing plant in Sapele in 2025. This plant is currently in operation.
The location of the proposed plant is within lease areas with significant natural gas reserves and proximal (10 meters) to Seplat’s gas plant. These reserves provide a backing for the planned phase 2 plant expansion to 40mmscfd.
Produced LNG will be delivered to customers within Nigeria via specialized LNG trucks, while medium-sized vessels/barges will be deployed to export the product to be utilized for LNG bunkering services and transported to nearby receiving terminals.
Terms for a gas sales agreement (GSA) with Seplat Energy have been finalized, and the GSA will be executed in Q4 2025.
The Sapele LNG will be a flagship project capable of supplying LNG to domestic, regional, and international markets.
The 15 hectares project site has been acquired, FEED completed, with EIA certificate and Licence to establish (LTE) issued by the regulators.
